Betty Cabrera, MPH, Director of Research Engagement and Operations, UCSD Gene Therapy Initiative

Betty L. Cabrera, MPH, brings over a decade of expertise in advancing cell and gene therapy research and development, with a focus on transforming patient care. At UC San Diego, she is currently shaping a prominent gene therapy research program within the university’s Gene Therapy Initiative (GTI). Prior to her current role, Betty served as Director of Operations for one of California’s first cell and gene therapy clinical research units, established with funding from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). This experience, combined with her involvement in clinical trials and patient registries, has deepened her understanding of the challenges and hopes of patients with rare genetic diseases and their families. Her career is marked by a commitment to improving outcomes for those who have historically lacked treatment options.
